The Mmamabula Gas to Liquid (GTL) involves the production of diesel to European 5+ standard from the Mmamabula Coal Mine.

 

The company aims to have concluded the feasibility study by the end of 2019. There have been expression of interest from Botswna Oil as strategic off-taker, however other diesel distributers from Botswana and Southern Africa have been identified as target market.

 

Maatla Energy has submitted an RFP to Botswana Oil in August 2017 with adjudication by end of Feb 2018.

 

In terms of technology, the technology partners have already been secured. Two technologies will be at play: coal gasification and fuel production from gas. The coal gasification converts coal to syngas. Modular fuel production transforms syngas into premium diesel fuel.

 

The production process has been mapped out and will involve the following: as an input, 180,000 tons per annum will be used. This will be translated into 1500bbl/d (80 - 90 million litres of diesel per annum).

 

On the financial side, Maatla is aiming for an IRR of 18%.
